A Bomber, Lamborghini, Bus, and a Burning House – Pole Spotlight 2024 02

This month at Pole we’re featuring 4 of our most popular sound libraries. We’re gradually revisiting our older sound libraries to add new features and improve usability. So, each of the four have been remastered, recut, tidied up, and given additional content.

In this post we’ll share what the sound libraries are, why we recorded them, what’s changed, and why they’re cool.

Let’s learn more.

MAN Lions Coach Bus

"It’s a chunky library,” Niklas Olsson, co-owner of Pole mentioned of the MAN Lion’s coach bus sound effects collection – one of our larger vehicle bundles with 15 onboard and 8 exterior perspective, 6 new bonus mixdown tracks, and 13 takes takes totalling over 420 files and nearly 50 gigabytes of audio.

“We didn’t have a bus in our library, and had been talking about recording one. So, we needed it internally, and had some external requests for one as well.”

Listen to the audio preview:

The sound of the bus was captured from multiple onboard locations – including the toilet, luggage space, and sleeping compacting perspectives – as well as typical interior, engine, exhaust locations as well. “We imagined where as a person you could be,” Olsson explained, such as the luggage compartment for kidnapping scenes. To record sound for each of these locations took planning to document the variety and accommodate the size of the vehicle for multiple microphones, too.

Foley was covered too, with highlights being the pneumatic hiss of the and thumping closing of the bus doors, as well as servos and mechanical elements.

What’s new:

  • 2 new bonus mix downs of the exterior perspectives, 6 mix downs total
  • Revised, better and more readable file names
  • Reorganized and streamlined take structure
  • Enhanced metadata and keywords
  • Reorganized and remastered Foley
  • New cheaper, abridged “Spotting Files” sound library variant

The Burning House Library

A special request from Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson let Pole co-owner Mats Lundgren far out in the countryside to record the sound of a house on fire.

With microphones sprawled around the shack (as well as a few inside as well), Mats captured the house catching fire and burning with strong, medium, and low intensities as the house burned to the ground.

North American B-25 Mitchell WWII Bomber

Pole revisited one our most rare vehicle recordings: the North American B-25 Mitchell World War II bomber recorded for War Thunder in the Netherlands in 2013. 7 takes of recordings documented the plane taking off, flying, passing by overhead, landing, taxiing and more.

To cover the extent of this historic aircraft, Pole co-owner Bernard Löhr and his team placed microphones in the cockpit, gunner area, rear, and bomb area, as well as multiple locations along the airstrip. Multiple perspectives captured stationary idles with revs, steadies, startups and shut downs.

Lamborghini Aventador

A recording request with a tight deadline lead to the team to capture the sound of a 2014 Lamborghini Aventador: Ubisoft’s Ivory Tower needed the sound of the Italian sports car for The Crew 2.

Mats explained: “The request came at a time of year when we couldn’t record in Stockholm.” Linus Anderberg set up a session with a former tech entrepreneur contact in Italy instead. While it was December in Sweden, Mats said “it felt like a nice spring day in Italy.”

The team recorded at an airstrip outside of the small town of Lucca nearby Pisa – one day a week the airstrip was shut down for other events. Using a new, streamlined technique, the team recorded 4 cars in one day – 2 Ferraris and 2 Lamborghinis, including the Aventador, which Mats described as having “a very special, throaty, tenor opera singer-sound.”
